History of BUU Gemlik Sunğipek – Asım Kocabıyık Campus
Bursa Uludağ University’s Gemlik Sungipek – Asım Kocabıyık Campus is built on the site of the historic Sunğipek Factory, one of the iconic industrial establishments of the Republican era. The name "Sunğipek" was given to the factory by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk on November 26, 1935. Its foundation was laid by İsmet İnönü on November 28, 1935, and the factory was officially inaugurated by Atatürk on February 1, 1938.
Over time, due to outdated technology, the Sungipek Factory ceased production. It was put up for sale under the privatization program within Sümer Holding in 1997 and was transferred to Tekel in 1998. In 2004, its 293-acre land was handed over to Uludağ University by the Privatization Administration, and the site was renamed Uludağ University Gemlik Campus. On May 21, 2007, the Uludağ University Senate decided to rename the campus Gemlik Sunğipek – Asım Kocabıyık Campus in recognition of the contributions made by the “Asım Kocabıyık Foundation for Culture and Education” to the university.

As of 2024, the Faculty of Law and Gemlik Asım Kocabıyık Vocational School continue to provide education on the campus. Additionally, student housing services are offered through two dormitories affiliated with the Credit and Dormitories Institution: a female dormitory with a capacity of 368 students and a male dormitory with a capacity of 194 students.
Gemlik Asım Kocabıyık Vocational School
Efforts to establish a vocational school in the Gemlik district under our university began in 1994, and in 2002, it was officially decided to establish the Gemlik Vocational School. However, due to the lack of necessary infrastructure, education could not commence at that time.
After the historic Sungipek Factory site in Gemlik was allocated to our university in 2004, construction work began, and education officially started at the vocational school. In 2005, in recognition of the contributions made by the Asım Kocabıyık Foundation for Culture and Education, the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) renamed the school as Gemlik Asım Kocabıyık Vocational School.
Currently, the school offers eight active programs with enrolled students. Among these programs, four include an optional preparatory year.
