BUU Strengthens Its International Research Presence with CERN

Bursa Uludağ University continues to expand its global research impact through advanced scientific collaborations. A new project led by Prof. Dr. Özkan Şahin from the Department of Physics, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, has been selected for funding by Türkiye’s Energy, Nuclear and Mineral Research Agency (TENMAK). The three-year project, titled “Performance Enhancement in Gaseous Detectors within CERN-DRD1 Collaboration”, will officially launch in January 2026.

This initiative reinforces BUU’s long-standing ties with CERN, where it has been a founding member of both the RD51 and the newly formed DRD1 Collaborations. The project aims to improve gaseous detector technologies through advanced simulations and sustainable detector materials, with applications extending beyond high-energy physics to fields like nuclear safety, medical imaging, and early-warning systems.

Experimental work will be conducted both at CERN and at BUU’s Gas Detector Research Laboratory — a facility set to meet international standards through this collaboration. The involvement of young researchers, including BUU doctoral and master’s students, will also contribute to Türkiye’s human capital development in particle physics.

BUU, as one of Türkiye’s Research Universities, remains committed to fostering international scientific cooperation and contributing to global knowledge production in strategic research areas.
