Architectural Restoration Program
General Information
The Architectural Restoration Program is part of the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning at the İznik Vocational School. Education has been provided in the Architectural Restoration Program since the 2000-2001 academic year. The program's first graduates were awarded in 2002. In the 2024-2025 academic year, there are 56 students enrolled in the 1st year of Architectural Restoration and 120 students enrolled in the 2nd year. Since its inception, 504 graduates have been awarded degrees. There are 3 faculty members specializing in the field enrolled in the program.
Degree Awarded
The Department of Architecture and Urban Planning, Architectural Restoration Program is subject to a fifth-level degree system with 120 ECTS credits in the field of higher education associate degree. Upon successful completion of the program and fulfillment of program requirements, an Associate Degree in Architectural Restoration is awarded.
Admission and Registration Requirements
Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent and have obtained a sufficient score on the University Student Selection Exam.
To obtain an associate degree in Architectural Restoration, students must successfully complete all required and elective courses (equivalent to a total of 120 ECTS credits) and have a minimum weighted grade point average of 2.00 out of 4.00.
This program requires a 30-day internship.
Program Requirements
1. Knowledge of the structure, operation, and importance of architectural restoration in national development
2. Knowledge of the basic principles and methods of restoration and conservation
3. Learning the Principles of Atatürk and the History of the Revolution, understanding their fundamental values, and relating them to current events
4. Ability to produce surveys of structures and structural elements, perform analyses, determine the current state, and draw restoration and restitution projects
5. Understanding Turkey's geographical values and issues and relating them to current events
6. Knowledge of basic technical drawing rules and the ability to document architectural elements by measuring and drawing them
7. Knowing and applying legal regulations and professional standards related to Architectural Restoration
8. Recognizing and understanding different cultures and communicating with different cultures
9. Being able to develop an awareness of protecting Turkey's tangible and intangible cultural heritage and being able to distinguish between positive and negative examples in the field of museology.
10. Detailed knowledge, analysis, and interpretation of the culture, history, religion, and art of civilizations that have existed in Turkey
11. Ensuring that Turkey's archaeological values, problems, and their connection to current events are understood
12. Ensuring that Turkey's values that are important in terms of art history, their problems, and their connection to current events are understood
13. Acquiring the ability to understand and explain the fundamental principles of different religions in Turkey and around the world
14. Acquiring the ability to know and convey the mythological values of Turkey and its surroundings
15. Being able to express oneself correctly and convey information in Turkish, the language of instruction
Program Objective
The objective is to provide scientific and high-quality education and training to cultivate restorers, practitioners, and mid-level and senior management candidates for the architectural restoration sector. In line with this objective, the program aims to cultivate candidates who possess professional knowledge and skills, are team-oriented, have a sense of professional ethics and responsibility, and are self-confident. Our program indirectly contributes to regional tourism, cultural promotion, and employment. The Architectural Restoration Program, which offers an educational environment intertwined with the historical and cultural values of Iznik, is taking place in our district and has an impact on our district in cultural and social terms by mobilizing the necessary trained human potential for the conservation and restoration practices that are being and will be carried out.
Program Learning Objectives
1. To train qualified restorers, practitioners, and middle and upper-level management candidates for the field of Architectural Restoration
2. To train candidates who possess professional knowledge and skills, are inclined to teamwork, have professional ethics and a sense of responsibility, and are self-confident
3: To train restorers and managerial candidates who can establish good human relations, think analytically, and have developed problem-solving, management, and organizational knowledge and skills
5: To train restorers and managerial candidates who possess fundamental social values such as tolerance, courtesy, respect, and honesty
Employment Profiles of Graduates
Students who have acquired the necessary qualifications for the profession can work in museums, universities, or restoration-conservation laboratories in the field of architectural restoration, focusing on the repair and preservation of movable and immovable cultural assets. Additionally, students who continue their undergraduate and graduate education after the DGS exam can also serve their field academically.
Programs for Vertical Transfer
Candidates who successfully complete their associate degree education can transfer to Architecture undergraduate programs if they receive a valid score on the Vertical Transfer Exam and within the quotas determined by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) framework regulation-Faculty/College.
Exams, Measurement, and Evaluation
Each student must register for courses at the beginning of the semester and attend at least 70% of the lectures and 80% of the practical sessions in order to be eligible to take the final exam. Students are required to take at least one midterm exam and a final exam for each course. Midterm exams (scores obtained from assessment tools such as assignments, lab exams, quizzes, etc. can also be included in the midterm exam score) contribute 40% to the final grade, while the final exam contributes 60%. All exams are graded on a scale of 100 points. Students must obtain at least 50 points on the final exam. Students who receive one of the letter grades AA, BA, BB, CB, or CC in a course are considered to have passed that course. DC and DD grades are conditional passing grades. For a student to pass a course in which they received a DC or DD grade, their overall weighted grade point average must be at least 2.0.
Graduation Requirements
Students who complete the courses listed in the Architectural Restoration Program information package graduate. To obtain an associate degree from the Architectural Restoration Program, students must successfully complete all required and elective courses (equivalent to a total of 120 ECTS credits) and have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 out of 4.00. There is also a requirement to complete a 30-day internship in order to graduate. Students who successfully complete all courses in the 2-year education plan and earn at least 120 ECTS credits are awarded an Associate Degree in Architectural Restoration.
Classrooms
Our college has technologically equipped classrooms (with projectors and internet connection), an internet-connected computer lab, a library, and a conference hall.
