Animal Husbandry and Breeding is a branch of Animal Science that addresses the evaluation (using best linear unbiased prediction and other methods) of the genetic value (estimated breeding value, EBV) of domestic livestock. Selecting animals for breeding with superior EBV in growth rate, egg, meat, milk, or wool production, or have other desirable traits has revolutionized agricultural livestock production throughout the world.
Husbandry and Breeding Section of the department is one of the basic section to contribute education of graduate and post graduate (M.Sc. and Ph.D.) students. A part from the educational activity the section deals with the activities summarised at below. Farm animals such as sheep, goat, cattle, poultry, ostrich and honeybee are raised at the Farm of the Faculty to use at student practices and investigations.
Other objectives of section;
- Students will gain the ability to identifying and describing the key issues related to animal breeding,
- To provide high-quality services at National and International levels,
- To provide consulting services to manufacturers, private farming enterprises, and research institutes under the Ministry of Agriculture,
- To conduct research in the field of Animal Breeding at National and international levels,
- To use advanced technology in training, teaching, and conducting research,
- To organize short-term courses for the benefit of technical staff of the Ministry of Agriculture and the producers,
- To disseminate the findings of conducted researches by publishing to the manufacturers.
