TUBITAK 1501 and 1507 Project Successes from Our Faculty Members

Development of Protective Lenses for Cutting Heads Used in CNC Fiber‑Laser Machines

Under the R&D supervision of Prof. Dr. M. Cemal ÇAKIR from our Faculty, ÖĞÜT KALIP Otomotiv Mühendislik Vana Makina San. ve Tic. Ltd. Şti. will carry out the project entitled “Development of Protective Lenses for Cutting Heads Used in CNC Fiber‑Laser Machines.” This R&D project has been awarded support in the 2024–2025 term under TÜBİTAK’s 1501 Industry R&D Projects Support Program.

In this project, for the first time in Turkey, protective lenses for the cutting heads of CNC fiber‑laser machines will be designed and manufactured domestically. In addition to achieving local production, the project aims to enhance the lens properties in several respects:

  • Anti‑reflective (AR) coating optimization: reduce reflectance while increasing transmission

  • Improved thermal resistance to withstand high‑temperature operation

  • Universal lens design that performs consistently across a range of laser power levels

  • Extended service life of the protective lenses

This is a new product for Turkey and also contains significant innovations for the global market. Beyond the core R&D gains—such as ultrasonic‑assisted five‑axis machining of focus, collimator, and telescopic lenses and application of AR coatings, and applying AR coatings to glass cells in solar panels—the project will deliver important sectoral benefits:

  • Reduced import dependency for domestic CNC fiber‑laser manufacturers and end users of protective lens assemblies

  • Lower production costs thanks to domestic manufacturing

  • Shorter lead times, eliminating the need for large inventory stocks

We wish every success to all researchers involved in this university–industry collaboration, and to the team at ÖĞÜT KALIP Otomotiv Mühendislik Vana Makina San. ve Tic. Ltd. Şti.

Design and Prototype Production of a Real‑Time Measuring, Analyzing, and Predictive Fault‑Detection Machine‑Vision System for Aluminum, Metal, and Plastic Extrusion Parts

Under the R&D supervision of Prof. Dr. M. Cemal ÇAKIR from our Faculty, PİXERA Elektronik ve Yazılım Teknolojileri Ltd. Şti. will carry out the project entitled “Design and Prototype Production of a Real‑Time Measuring, Analyzing, and Predictive Fault‑Detection Machine‑Vision System for Aluminum, Metal, and Plastic Extrusion Parts.” This R&D project has been awarded support in the 2024–2025 term under TÜBİTAK’s 1507 Industry R&D Projects Support Program.

The goal of this project is to develop, for the first time in Turkey’s extrusion sector, an online optical device using a camera to measure extrusion parts in real time. Globally, there is also a need for an integrated system capable of 3D measurement and surface‑defect detection. The system to be developed will be the first optical system that combines:

  • 3D mapping of extrusion profiles

  • Proprietary mathematical models for predictive analysis

With this optical measurement system, line operators will receive instantaneous data on cross‑sectional dimensions, surface quality, and defect metrics. This will enable immediate fault detection and intervention, preventing hundreds of meters of defective production on each line. Additional anticipated benefits include:

  • Increased inspection speed: from the typical 20–50 Hz of imported systems up to 300 Hz

  • Comprehensive quality control: not only outer‑profile measurements but also surface‑defect detection

We congratulate all the researchers contributing to this university–industry collaboration and extend our best wishes to the team at PİXERA Elektronik ve Yazılım Teknolojileri Ltd. Şti.
