ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT OF GENETICS ACADEMIC STAFF
Plants and animals have been bred since prehistoric times with the awareness that the characteristics of living things are inherited. However, the modern science of genetics, which seeks to understand the mechanisms of hereditary transmission, only began in the mid-19th century with the work of Gregor Mendel.
The discovery that DNA is the hereditary material brought a different dimension to the science of genetics. Thanks to the developments in the field of molecular genetics, the mechanisms underlying many diseases have been determined and methods for the diagnosis and treatment of these diseases have been developed.
Our department contributes to education in all periods of undergraduate and graduate education with research and inquiry-based learning, presentations, laboratory applications and field studies.
In our genetics laboratory, which is technologically very modern: PCR, RT-PCR, spectrophotometer, horizontal electrophoresis, gel imaging and documentation, DNA extraction and storage, etc. In our genetics laboratory, which is very modern in terms of technology, QTL analysis, suspicious parentage tests, diagnosis of hereditary diseases, gene expression and mutations can be determined, especially the determination of genes that affect the productivity of livestock.
