THE WATER OF PLANET EARTH IS NOT AS MUCH AS WE THINK!

Nearly 71% of the Earth’s surface is covered with water. However, our freshwater resources are not as much as we think.

Water, the main reason for the presence of life on Earth, is continuously moving via the Hydrological Cycle. Water is flowing in an infinite cycle between oceans, the atmosphere, and land. Water is connecting the species with ecosystems, rivers with lakes, mountains with seas, and people with the systems of the Earth. Our lives depend on the hydrological cycle.

The total amount of water on Earth is fixed, does not change.

97.5 % of the water of the planet is salty. The ratio of freshwater in the total is just 2.5%. 79% of this low amount is hidden in the glaciers, and 20% is in the ground. The freshwater that is available for us to be used in our needs is only 1% of the total freshwater. This water is replenished with precipitation.

We pollute water while we use it. If we do not recover this polluted water, most of it ends up in oceans by contaminating the lands it passes. If not the total amount, the amount of freshwater is lowered in this way.

Water scarcity impacts more than 40% of the people. More countries challenge with water stress every day. It is predicted that at least one-fourth of the people will live in recurring water shortages.

Protecting the water means using it only as much as we need.

Protecting water means leaving freshwater to future generations, not salty water.

Protecting water means keeping it clean and thereby protecting the environment.

Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6) underlines the importance of Clean Water and Sanitation.
